MVPA ETA (a sneak peek at what's to come)

I've received emails recently from schools asking whether we are planning to add any new features to the Moki App. Some of these have been from teachers looking to measure MVPA. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is a category of activity intensity that has been consistently shown to benefit and/or reduce the risk of many chronic disease states. In a nutshell, any activity that makes you breathe faster and feel warmer you can class as MVPA.

In the UK Government's 2019 physical activity guidelines for children it states:

'Children and young people should engage in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity for an average of at least 60 minutes per day across the week. This can include all forms of activity such as physical education, active travel, after-school activities, play and sports.'

There is no mention in these guidelines as to how schools can measure this but, come January, Moki will do it for you!

Moki Bands record steps and the Moki App currently displays this step data across individual students, classes and the entire school. So schools can measure individual, class and whole school physical activity. What they can't do at the moment is see when students are engaging in MVPA. All that is about to change and I thought I'd share a sneak peek of this and some other new features with you.

Moki MVPA

Here are some highlights:

  • We'll show MVPA as a student's Daily Average (both as an individual and a class/whole school average) across any time frame selected AND also as a Total
  • We have added a Moki Grade to the Profile screen and Reports section of all students and teams/classes. This is calculated based on both step and MVPA data and measured against government guidelines and other schools using Moki
  • The graphs both in Profile and Reports screens will be more granular, displaying data in 30-minute chunks

Other things in the pipeline:

  • We are developing a web page for each Moki user that will display all of their data to be shared amongst parents or via social media
  • We are very aware that the Moki App currently supports Windows only and hope to release the Mac and Chromebook versions by February 2020

If you'd like to hear more about how Moki measures and grades physical activity or if you have any other feedback or feature requests please do get in touch and we'll be very happy to chat.
